Paul Newman passed away in September, 2008 at age 83. A good actor and humanitarian, he had a long, full and varied life. He entertained us and he contributed to us.

Twenty five years ago I would pass through Katonah and at times would park my car there as a part of my daily commute to New York City. Katonah from what I could see, was/is a beautiful small town framed by a large tress.

"A Ride for Liberty" Eastman Johnson
The perfect sub-suburb of New York and I was not surprised that Ms. Clinton and the former President picked Katonah as their New York home. (As pointed out to me the Clintons picked Chappaqua, NY, which is equally lovely, my error)
What I did not know about was the Katonah Art Museum which has me wondering what other treasures did I pass up while riding the commuter train. The current exhibition “Walt Whitman and American Art of the Civil War Era” features some of my favorite paintings of this period, many of which I’ve only seen in reproduction. Good reminder to always stop by the local museum.
This landmark exhibition takes its themes from a troubled era in American history and its title from a Walt Whitman poem. Whitman’s elegiac words introduce the portraits, landscapes, battlefield scenes, and genre pictures that depict the heroism of the common soldier, the flight of escaped slaves, and the courage of the women and children left behind. Bold, Cautious, True features the work of some of the most important American artists of the mid-19th century, including Frederic E. Church, Sanford Gifford, Winslow Homer, Eastman Johnson, John Frederick Kensett, and Worthington Whittredge. Katonah Museum of Art

Dale Chihuly, American glass artist, will have works included in the Fine Arts collection showing around the Las Vegas “CityCenter” public spaces. His beautiful shapes, daring configurations, all in glorious color, can be very dramatic.

Born in Tacoma, WA, Chihuly’s pieces are prized and can be found in more than 200 museums across the world – and he will even do a chandelier for someone’s McMansion!
His explanation of why people like his work, “People like to look at glass; it’s like looking at light”.

There are a number of exhibits that I would love to see. Most are local, meaning that they most

Horst Janssen Self Portrait
likely will not travel to other cities.

- Paul McCarthy White Snow at the Hauser & Wirth Gallery in New York, exhibit ends December 24.
- Arshile Gorky in Context at the Philadelphia Museum of Art until January 10, 2010, features the works of artist that had an impact on Gorky’s own work.

One of the great many things about the Holidays is the rush to “Box Set” any music that isn’t nailed down. This season is no exception – there is a plethora of new packages of Jazz greats in a box:

* “The Complete Miles Davis Columbia Album Collection” – 70 CD set (yes, 70) with DVD
* “Ella Fitzgerald: Twelve Nights in Hollywood” – 4 CD set from Ella’s 1961 engagement at the Crescendo Club in Los Angeles
* John Coltrane’s, 1960 studio recording “Giant Steps” (He wrote all the music)
*And there are also new compilations of early live recordings from Billie Holiday and Oscar Petersen.
Abundance! Cool.

I am only vaguely familiar with the photographic work of Evelyn Hofer, but on seeing a notice that she

Entrance to subway: Broadway
had passed away earlier this month I thought it would be good for me to revisit the works that I had seen before and see what I had missed. I remember years ago strolling the NYC streets armed with my Minolta 4 by 4 and thinking that these were the pictures I wanted to take and the kinds of paintings I wanted to paint. Not necessarily the same subject matter but taking the approach that says if I spend a little time to look at what’s in front of me it is often astonishingly beautiful.

If you like baubles, bangles and beads, (or, you’re just a rock hound) the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco will excite you with “Cartier and America”.
“Cartier came to fame as the “King of Jewelers” during the Belle Époque for his beautifully made diamond and platinum jewelry created for the courts of Europe and Americans of the Gilded Age. “

An example of the Cartier genius is shown here – “Tutti Frutti” Necklace, 1936 Paris – made with platinum, white gold, sapphires, rubies, diamonds and emeralds. (I think this can be worn today and it would fit right in).

The MOMA is excellent at putting these types of shows together with all the aids, history and other ways of educating it’s visitors. We would like to encourage you to walk through the exhibit the first time with out the aids and soak up and experience the work.
