Morris Graves – Mysticism and Symbolism

Morris Graves – Mysticism and Symbolism

The 100th birthday of American painter Morris Graves, (1910-2001) is celebrated with the exhibit “The Visionary Art of Morris Graves“ at the Meridian Gallery in San Francisco CA until May 15th

“…Largely a self-taught artist closely associated with the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. His paintings, often small works on paper, were among the earliest to synthesize Eastern aesthetics and philosophy with the American Transcendental tradition. In his own words, Graves was working “to evolve a changing language of symbols, a language with which to remark upon the qualities of our mysterious capacities which direct us toward ultimate reality.”

One of the great things about living in the Bay Area are the flowers in bloom (if you don’t suffer from allergies) contrasted by both Mount Tam and the San Francisco Bay. During the winter and pre-spring it rains a bit but once the rain stops a fun thing to do is to walk the SF Marina people watching and hanging out at the Fort Mason Center, home to the SFMOMA Artists Gallery and much more.

From March 18 -April 23, (Opening reception: Thursday, March 18, 5:30 -7:30 p.m.) the works of Lisa Curet, Keira Kotler and Indira Martina Morre

The Look of Fresh Paint and Gallery Space

I don’t  know that Galleries have a smell and when I see pictures of the Betty Cuningham Gallery I can do one better then smelling it I can almost taste it. When I see paintings with tons of space around them for viewers to soak up each painting as if it were for them alone I feel joy and some envy (sorry, but true).

Friends Of Artists

Friends Of Artists

It is said that creativity is what has us (not sure who the us is) excel in the world, which in my thinking is another way to say we better support the arts.

I don’t think you need to know a lot about art, just know what it is that you like and can afford. Regardless of the price, if it brings you joy it is well worth it. Start off small, visit local artists and get to know them and support them. You will never know where this could lead. A famed example of artist support is currently on exhibit at the National Gallery of Art, until May 2, 2010: The Robert and Jane Meyerhoff Collection includes works by Willem de Kooning, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns and Jackson Pollock, well known artists, but they were not always well known. So become a collector of works that you like.

Trust What You See

Trust What You See

by Jose Chavez Morado

It may be as a result of the “recession” or simply that I’ve not been paying attention, in any case I’m appreciative of the many exhibits at local Museums that are featuring works of art by artists you may have overlooked.

Locally in Phoenix there is The Americas Series at the Phoenix Art Museum presented by the Latin American Art Alliance. Here you may find work by artists you’ve never heard before and be wonderfully surprised by its freshness and creativity. See the works of Jose Chavez, Thomas Benrimo and others.
