MoMA – New Abstract Art Exhibit

MoMA – New Abstract Art Exhibit

“Abstract Expressionist New York” at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC  highlights work from some of the most influential  artists of the 40’s thru the 60’s that gravitated to one spot with “…a merger of ideas and styles called abstract expressionism and made New York the center of the art world…”

The MoMA presentation is “a vibrant, energizing show that’s far more than a greatest-hits collection. Sure, you’ll recognize some of the 250 or so works here — Pollock’s drip paintings, Louise Nevelson’s black boxes, Barnett Newman’s stripes. But with them are works by less familiar artists (William Baziotes, Bradley Walker Tomlin) plus early pieces by the masters we know.”

Painting by Brian Kershisnik at The Mesa Art Center

What I appreciate most about Brian Kershisnik’s Paintings, is his uncomplicated way of telling of a story. Most of our lives are void of heavy drama and are filled instead with simply unnoticeable and fulfilling events. His paintings are about these events that we acknowledge only as we look back at what gave us the most joy.

Jewelry in Cleveland!

Jewelry in Cleveland!

92 year old jeweler (I would call him “artist”), John Paul Miller has 50 of his brilliant pieces on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art until January 2, 2011. Beautiful and magical.

His jewelry is often about “…fleeting creatures of earth, sea, and sky—snails, squids, crabs, moths, and flies…inspiring a complicated palette of seductive enamels and textured forms. Historical reference and modern abstraction also infuse his designs, bringing together that which he saw and that which he imagined to form a body of work full of curiosity and self-expression.”

Walter Mosley on Big Think

Walter Mosley on Big Think

Great observation and wisdom by Walter Mosley for the creative mind, especially for us as we get older. We recall our personal and generational history in glowing terms and on occasions dismiss the talents of a younger generation. We remember SNL with Dan, John and Chevy as always hilarious, which was far from the truth. The old SNL had as many weaknesses if not more then the current version.

I feel that Mosley’s point of view can also be applied towards education, social relationship and personal aspirations. What there was to learn that we saw as being relevant 50 years ago may not serve the same purpose today.

Bobbing Down to “The Diplomats”

Bobbing Down to “The Diplomats”

I could never listen to Poetry. Had to read it in order for it to make sense. If there was a beat or music, then that’s all I recognized, never really catching the lyrics.  Which is to say there has been a ton of “Rap” that has eluded me.

On reading about the reunion of the “The Diplomats” the famed Harlem Hip Hop group, I decided to listen to a few of their raps while reading the lyrics. To be truthful, I was singing along with them silently. I still have the moves while sitting, just wished I had a hat that I could turned to the side.

John Baldessari at the Met

John Baldessari at the Met

Conceptual artist John Baldassari  will have his work on view at The Met until January 2011.

“If I saw the art around me that I liked, then I wouldn’t do art.”, Baldessari

“The exhibition brings together a full range of the artist’s innovative work over five decades, from his early paintings and phototext works, his combined photographs, and the irregularly shaped and over-painted works of the 1990s, to his most recent production. A selection of his videos and artist’s books will also be included in the exhibition.”
