The Scottsdale Artists’ School wraps up
The Creative Process Lecture Series
for the season with a slide presentation of the work of world renown artist Joaquin Sorolla by painter John Kilroy.
The lecture will take place at 7 pm Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.
Sorolla was born in Valencia, Spain in 1863 and had a very successful career as a “natural painterâ€â€”painting nature as it truly is, full of light and brightness. After his death in 1923, his work fell out of favor until the 1980s, when the art community reassessed his genius and recognized his talent and influences.
John Kilroy, an artist whose work has been greatly influences by Sorolla, will teach a workshop The Big Picture: Picture Design, Concept And Analysis, April 30-May 4 at the Scottsdale Artists’ School. The lecture is held at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, 7380 E. 2nd Street in downtown Scottsdale. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased in person at Scottsdale Artists’ School, 3720 N. Marshall Way or by calling 480-990-1422. Free parking for each lecture is available in the public parking garage located to the west of the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts building off 2nd Street.

I usually stay away from themes, the stories in my paintings are not consistent from one painting to another, except that I normally say I am complete with a painting once I recognize the people who are in the painting.
I don’t really know them, but they look to me like people who I would know.
It’s the faces that inspire me. I imagine the conversation that they are about to have, what concerns them and have they figured out the answer yet.
I’ve often heard writers talk about the dreams they have for the characters they’ve created for their novels.

There is old school grittiness in Dee Dee’s photographs. I am reminded of Brassaï, and possibly Gordon Parks, a blunt truthfulness about the way that things are. It’s genuinely real and beautiful. Her work will be featured in two exhibits in Phoenix Arizona. April 6 to June 27 at the Herberger Theater Center and the entire month of June at the Burton Barr Library.
Dee Dee says
Photography is magic!
It captures moments in time and connects the viewer with the experience. My work explores and examines the life of a people: their past, their present and their future. My photographs are simply about creating, connecting and sharing. They tell stories of people, places and things. The images capture the wit and immortalize the legacy of the strength, struggle and the eternal spirit of my people.

They illustrate the impact of our complex commonality and universal kinship. My work represents the triumphantly enduring faith and pride of Black People! My passion is to share my people’s journey through photography; and because we’re not monolithic, the viewer will experience a myriad of expressions.

I went to the most incredible gallery art exhibit ever last night. I can’t remember ever seeing a group show with this many artists (24 artists) that was so well curated and inspiring. If you are in the New York area, please check out the show, Big Picture at the Nathan Cummings Foundation at 475 Tenth Avenue, 14th floor. I went to support to a friend, Brett Cook’s work. And the huge treat was seeing a Kehinde Wiley in person. Just from seeing his work on CBS’ Sunday Morning, I have become a huge admirer of his work. This show solidified my admiration.
