Earlier this year when the Las Vegas Art Museum closed, you had to figure that the only way art could survive in this city was for it to be housed inside of someones outrageous imagination. For a city already jammed with hotels and casinos, MGM has pushed forward with the completion of City Center, which is a glass city inside  a glass city. And they’ve promised that there will be art.

The Fine Art Collection will encompass a multitude of styles and media – ranging from sculptures and paintings and other works of art including large-scale installations – engaging visitors on both a visual and intellectual level. Some will be existing pieces, carefully chosen for their artistic value and cultural significance; others will be site-specific installations for which the artist has been invited to command their vision over the space

This past week Maya Lin supervised the installation of one of her sculptures and the works of Tony Cragg, Isa Genzken , Nancy Rubins and others are also slated to be showcased. My personal hope is that people see the art work before going to the casinos.

An Inspiring Love Story – Slumdog Millionaire

An Inspiring Love Story – Slumdog Millionaire

slumdogDuring the holidays “Slumdog Millionaire” was given national distribution, which means that I finally got to see it. I, like many others, endured the lines to get into the multiplex  but most people were there to see the new Clint Eastwood film, Gran Torino or the many other Hollywood Christmas releases. Slumdog is a special film and I hope more people get to see it. It certainly has all the 2009 award buzz. There is lots to like about this movie, from the colorful scenes, the use of subtitles and the way the story is told. It is a world, unfamiliar to me, trapped inside a love story that is both entertaining and beautiful. It explores some of the history of this part of the world which has dominated the news recently. Made me curious and thankful for my own blessing. This is a big screen movie so don’t wait until DVD.

The Louvre and the Masterpiece at High Museum, Atlanta

The Louvre and the Masterpiece at High Museum, Atlanta

Museum exhibits offer a vivid way to learn about art and culture. This show at the High Museum in Atlanta runs untilvermeerlacemaker September 09, and looks to reflect what is seen as “masterpiece” and how our views have changed or progressed over time.

What is a Masterpiece? What is a Masterpiece? will be divided into two parts, with the first exploring the changing historical definitions of the concept of masterpiece through a selection of objects from the ancient Near East through mid-19th-century works. In the ancient world, a masterpiece was defined by an object’s owner and purpose. In contrast, medieval artists’ works achieved mastery within guild levels. Notable objects in this section include two such inscribed works: a Limoges ciborium (ca. 1200 A.D.), a vessel used for holding communion hosts, and a hammered bronze basin known as the Baptistery of St. Louis, (ca. late 13th/early 14th century A.D.). The Baptistery of Saint Louis was later used to baptize Louis XIII in 1610 and Napoleon III’s son in 1856.

Olympics Opening Ceremony – More Than the Noodle and Gun Powder

We’ve been used to hearing that China has the largest population in the world, 1.3 billion people. However it is still difficult to get your mind wrapped around that number. It sounds like the national debt, mind boggling.

To actually see 15,000 performers begins to put things into perspective. Lets face it “Cats” is a big production by our standards.

Through out the day, radio and T.V. commentators were bubbling about this spectacle (meant in the most positive of terms) almost to the point that I was willing to let it pass by, a little pissed off that NBC would not show it live.

I’m glad I abandoned my attitude and watched. 😀
